It seems that most people are in the I LOVE winter camp or hunker down until the sun shines again camp. This post is not for the I love winter camp. It’s for those who struggle to get through the darker colder months, identify with S.A.D (seasonal affective disorder) and those that just generally drag through this part of the year.
Natural light stimulates the production of hormones that help to regulate our energy levels. By getting natural light in your eyes in the morning the hormone cortisol is released to wake us up. During the day, exposure to natural light stimulates serotonin and cortisol to improve focus, mood and overall alertness. As the day winds down and the light fades, the hormone melatonin spikes to create drowsiness and help us sleep. Exposure to artificial light in the evening may suppress melatonin and effect sleep. Red light therapy (RLT) can also be very powerful in helping create restful and restorative sleep. The wavelength of red light helps to promote relaxation, decreases inflammation, improves mood and helping to regulate the sleep wake cycle. Check out this blog for more about red light therapy
Movement is a powerful mood enhancer and stress reliever. By engaging in regular exercise the body releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural mood boosters! Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean you can move your body outside, although indoor workouts are just as good. Taking a class at the gym, home exercises and dancing are all great options!
Practices such as yoga, meditation, and deep-breathing exercises can help to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. These activities contribute to a positive mindset and can be done indoors, creating a cozy and calming atmosphere during winter.
Crucial especially in the winter months as we tend to retreat to less activites outside the home. Sharing activities and time with loved ones can provide support during the winter months. Trying a new activity, playing board games or learning a new skill are all great things to do with friends or family!
